[IC Information]
Character Name: Ienzo
Series: Kingdom Hearts
Gender: Male
Age: about 21 or so
Species: Human
Appearance: Even as a fully grown person, Ienzo is not precisely what anyone could call “tall”. Though he might not have necessarily be the shortest person in the Organization even discounting Roxas and Xion, he is certainly the shortest among his current peers. Similarly, much like all who found themselves returned to Radiant Garden in the aftermath of the, he has discarded the once-familiar coat of the Organization for the lab coat of the apprentice he once was. The only difference is that now it fits him better than it did as a child. In similar vein, it should be noted that he doesn’t cut a particularly imposing figure, and likely never will. Instead, he tends to look very much the bookish scientist at the best of times.
The one thing that hasn’t changed with the turning of the years is his hair, which is still the same shade of blueish silver and still falls into his face such as cover most of the right side. That fact that he hasn’t so much as bothered to cut it likely speaks of habit more than anything.
Personality: Ienzo has come a long way from the nearly-mute child he used to be. First and foremost, he is not only far more willing to talk than he’d ever been before, but is also surprisingly eloquent when he wants to be. This goes hand in hand with the fact that he tends to be something of a schemer, carefully hoarding away bits and pieces of information away for further use. This may have changed somewhat in the change between Zexion and Ienzo, but as the change is still a relatively recent one, this will likely be what he defaults to more often than not. That being said, Ienzo is not simply Zexion echoed back across the years. With the return of his heart has come the softening of the sharper edges that once he’d once had, and given him back the ability to truly care about things.
Zexion has, however, left an indelible mark on Ienzo and no surprise, given that his time as Zexion was very literally his formative years. Even with the harsher edges worn off by the presence of his heart, he is still a man who vastly prefers playing chessmaster than anything particularly combat oriented. Similarly, growing up in the cutthroat environment provided be the Organization has given him a tendency to hide not only his carefully gleaned secrets but also anything that could be seen as weakness. Words are his weapons and he knows all too well they can cut both ways. He is, however, still very much possessed of the curiosity he had as a child although it’s mellowed into a much more scientific sort of curiosity (in most cases). His childhood wariness, on the other hand, has all but vanished entirely. In its place stands (self-)confidence, backed by an understanding of both people and their emotions.
This does not extend to trust. Having seen both the best and the worst of people, Ienzo is slow to trust - a hold-over from his younger days - and is more than a little cautious when it comes to people he is unfamiliar with and thus cannot neatly fit into his carefully structured understanding of things. He has allies, and colleagues, and acquaintances, but he doesn’t really have friends. He’s always had an interest in keeping people at something like arm’s length and that doesn’t exactly make for lasting friendships, as he’d consider them. The one exception to this is his relationship with Aeleus. Even when ienzo was little more than an overly silent child, Aeleus proved himself both trustworthy and willing to treat Ienzo as he wanted to be treated and that online earned him a tentative sort of trust. The fact that Aeleus’ character hasn’t changed much over the intervening decades has only proved the point - as things stand now, Ienzo would put his life in Aeleus’ hands without so much as a second thought or even a moment of hesitation. In as sense, you could say that Aeleus is the only person Ienzo truly trusts, not just with mundane details of his day to day life but also the things he would normally keep to himself - and the partnership (if it can be called that) very much works both ways.
History: As befits a relatively minor character, there isn’t a whole lot that is known about Ienzo’s past. What we do know however is that at some point prior to the events of Birth by Sleep his parents died of what were presumably natural causes. At some point thereafter, Ansem the Wise and his apprentices took up the task of raising him - how or why is unfortunately left as a mystery. None the less, Ienzo became the sixth and youngest apprentice of Ansem the Wise in short order. It was at his insistence that Ansem built the great lab that would see the creation of the Heartless. Similarly, he was all too willing to continue on with clandestine research into the nature of the darkness, to the point that he was perfectly willing to condemn Ansem the Wise to exile in the very darkness they had been researching.
Sadly, things didn’t end quite as any of them had expected. Though they had succeeded in creating Heartless, they were not so easy to control and in time the world itself feel to darkness - but not before that same darkness stole not only Ienzo’s heart, but the hearts of all six apprentices. Unlike most people who suffer the same fate, however, they did not cease to be. Instead, they found themselves reborn as Nobodies - empty shells of person existing on little more than pure will. Thus, they became the first members of a group that eventually became known as Organization XIII. Much like the earliest days of Ienzo’s history, the early days of the Organization are relatively unknown. However at some point, Ienzo - now going by the name Zexion - hit enough of a growth spurt to reach his adult height.
In time, the Organization’s numbers grew to be a full thirteen, and it is there that Zexion once again entered the picture. In particular, he was one of many tasked with ensuring that their newly acquired thirteenth member knew the ins and outs of life the Organization. That was, however, little more than a temporary assignment - scarcely more than a handful of weeks after their thirteenth member joined the Organization, Zexion was reassigned to Castle Oblivion. The intent of the mission? To see if the Keyblade wielder - a boy by the name of Sora - could be made into a useful ally.
Or at least that was certainly the plan, with three members of the Organization ranged aboveground, and Zexion and two of his fellow scientist set up in the basements. Of course, things didn’t quite go as planned. While the Sora did show up as planned, it wasn’t long at all before the two of the aboveground crew (Larxene and Marluxia) prove to be traitors, looking to claim the Keyblade for their own use, with the third (Axel) a loose canon at the best. Zexion and his colleagues, Lexaeus and Vexen, meanwhile found themselves dealing with an unexpected guest to the castle. As Sora has come to the castle, so too has his friend Riku. Given the actions of the group aboveground, Zexion and his colleagues believed the decision to be clear: sway Riku to their side and then use him against Sora.
Using a Replica of Riku that Vexen had created, they began to draw Riku deeper into the castle. It was a simple but elegant plan, that hinged on nothing more than Riku’s native curiosity. (The Replica, needless to say, did not remain belowground for very long before being offered to the team aboveground for the purpose of luring Sora instead.) However every plan has its flaws, and in this case, the flaw was Axel. Vexen was the first casualty, taken down off-handedly by Axel in an attempt to prove his loyalty to Marluxia’s cause. However, although this left Zexion and Lexaeus somewhat underhanded by numbers alone, it wasn’t much of an inconvenience apart from that. Instead, with the Replica in Marluxia’s care (and thus unavailable for their use), Lexaeus goes to attempt to sway Riku to their side. Sadly, the fight that ensued cost Lexaeus his life. Bereft thus of both allies and the one person he could be said to truly trust, Zexion himself entered the fray, drawing in powers of illusionry and wordplay to sway Riku. The attempt almost worked, but at the very last moment Riku saw through to the heart of the illusions and so to Zexion himself. The ensuing fight went no better than Lexaeus’ fight had for him, although he was at least able to - just barely - avoid what would have been the killing blow by escaping through a portal of darkness. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the reprieve he’d hoped for - although Axel wasn’t waiting for him at the other end, he still only had a moment of respite before Axel appeared and with the Replica in tow this time. After a fleeting moment of panic due to confusing the Replica for the real Riku, Zexion began to speculate on how the pair of them could use the Replica to their advantage yet. Axel, however, was going to be having none of that and encourages the Replica to finish Zexion off.
Worn out by the fight, Zexion put up barely any amount of resistance, and in short order he went the same way as his other companions. However, in that single moment of backhanded backstabbing, Axel may have also offered Zexion something neither of them could have expected at the time: a chance to return to life, this time as a complete being.
So it is that when the former-apprentices begin to wake up as complete beings in the aftermath of Xemnas’ defeat, Zexion - now once more Ienzo - is among them. Oddly, he doesn’t seem to have any real problems with Axel (now Lea), and instead is perfectly to explain and theorize on not only what happened but what was most likely to come next. It’s at some point after his revival and consequent discussions that he finds himself once again on the SoL.
